The next step in the scholarship process is the application! Here are some tips to consider as you begin to apply for scholarships...
- Start looking for scholarships early!
- Make sure you meet all of the eligibility requirements before you apply for a scholarship.
- Meet all application deadlines. Don't procrastinate, it's okay to turn an application in early!
- Don't ignore small awards. A lot of small scholarships will add up.
- Start gathering letters of recommendations early! A lot of scholarships require letter(s) of recommendation, and they may take longer than you expect.
- If a scholarship requires an essay, take your time on it. This is your chance to tell the committee something about yourself that isn't listed elsewhere on the application. Make sure you use proper grammar, and have a teacher like Mrs. Houp or Mrs. Langley read over it before you turn it in!
- Don't be afraid to brag on yourself. It's okay to sing your own praises when applying for scholarships.
- Don't give up! The scholarship process can be difficult and full of rejection. Just because you don't get one scholarship doesn't mean you won't get another. Be patient and keep trying! Save your application information so you can apply for other scholarships quicker.
*BEWARE OF SCAMS... There are a lot of scholarship scams in the world today. Never pay to apply for a scholarship, and do not provide credit card information to use a free scholarship search. Read the fine print before providing too much information as well. Some companies may send you unwanted information about other services they offer or sell your information.
